Are You Awake For Cataract Surgery?

Are You Awake For Cataract Surgery?

Quick answer: Yes, in most cases you stay awake for cataract surgery. The eye is numbed with drops and you're usually given light sedation, so you feel no pain and many people don't remember the procedure. General anesthesia is rarely needed.

It sounds daunting, but cataract surgery is one of the most common procedures in the world and is over quickly. For the anesthesia details, see what anesthesia is used.

How cataract surgery is performed

The cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). There are two methods: traditional surgery (a small blade incision, then ultrasound to break up the lens) and laser cataract surgery (a laser maps and performs key steps with high precision, and can address astigmatism at the same time). Premium lenses are typically placed with the laser method. See laser vs. traditional cataract surgery.

Will I feel anything?

No. Your eye is numbed with anesthetic drops, you may get light sedation, and a small instrument gently holds the eyelids so you don't need to worry about blinking. It can feel slightly unusual, but it isn't painful.

What's the recovery like?

Cataract surgery is usually a same-day procedure taking about 15 to 20 minutes. You'll wear an eye shield for the first 24 hours and while sleeping for a few days. Many people see better within hours, with full results over about six weeks. Take it easy and avoid strenuous activity for the first couple of weeks. See the healing stages of cataract surgery for the full timeline.
