Healing Stages of Cataract Surgery
Quick answer: Most people heal from cataract surgery within about six to eight weeks, moving through four stages: the first 72 hours, the first couple of weeks, weeks two to six, and full recovery. Mild redness, watering, and blurry vision early on are normal and settle as the eye heals.
Cataract surgery is one of the most common and safest procedures in medicine, but it still involves a healing period. Here is what each stage looks like, plus a few simple do's and don'ts that help recovery along.
The four healing stages of cataract surgery
Stage 1: the first 72 hours
The procedure itself takes only a few minutes, though you'll be in the office about half an hour with preparation. Afterward your eye is covered with a clear shield, and you'll need someone to drive you home. The numbing wears off over a few hours. Many people see better right away; for others it takes a few days. In these first 72 hours it's completely normal to have:
- A red or bloodshot eye
- Watering
- Blurred or double vision
- A gritty feeling
- Mild discomfort
Your surgeon will usually recheck the eye 24 to 48 hours later. You can read, watch TV, and use a computer right away, and use your prescribed drops plus over-the-counter pain relief if needed. See red eyes after cataract surgery for what's normal and what isn't.
Stage 2: the first couple of weeks
Discomfort usually eases quickly and vision begins to improve, though some people need the full six to eight weeks for the full benefit. Avoid heavy lifting and overexertion; gentle walking actually helps recovery.
Stage 3: weeks two to six
The eye keeps healing and the eye-brain connection strengthens, so most people notice a marked improvement in clarity. Some visual effects such as glare or seeing the edges of the lens typically settle during this window.
Stage 4: full recovery
By weeks six to eight the tissues are fully healed. If you need glasses, this is the time for an eye test and a new prescription. Most people are back to all normal activities with clearer vision.
When to call your surgeon
Contact your ophthalmologist promptly if you have increasing pain or redness, worsening vision, flashes of light, a dark curtain across your vision, or a sudden increase in floaters. These are uncommon but worth checking quickly.
Advanced cataract care at West Boca Eye Center
The type of procedure affects how fast you heal. Laser cataract surgery uses a precise laser rather than a blade for key steps, which can be gentler on surrounding tissue. At West Boca Eye Center in Boca Raton we use the latest technology for cataract surgery. Learn more about your options or book a consultation with Dr. Brent Bellotte and our team.
While cataract surgery is an extremely common and safe procedure, it does involve trauma to the eye. Therefore, there will be a period of healing. In most cases, you’ll be completely over the operation within eight weeks, during which there are distinctive healing stages.
