The capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) in the healthcare field are increasing rapidly. When it comes to the use of AI in cataract surgery and care, the benefits can already be seen throughout the entire process. From the earliest stages of diagnosis through the pre-, intra-, and post-operative phases, the advantages to both patients and surgeons have already entered the realms of science fiction—and this will only increase as technology progresses.
We can break down such advanced AI functionality into four distinct stages:
- The diagnostic stage.
- The pre-op stage.
- The operative stage.
- The post-op stage.
1. The Diagnostic Stage
The first stage of cataract care is the diagnosis. This traditionally occurs during a regular eye examination, during which an eye doctor performs various tests. However, this takes time—a person can only view a single patient at a time, after all—and requires both clinician and patient to be in the same place.
AI imaging tools, on the other hand, can be utilized by less experienced staff. The technology can quickly analyze them, determining even the earliest stages of cataracts, and these results can then be assessed by the ophthalmologist. AI can do this at pace, without rest, and is highly accurate, thanks to being trained on huge amounts of data.
But one thing that is really, really exciting is the upcoming technology that is predictive eye models. These AI and machine learning (ML models that are currently in the pipeline will potentially be able to take data, such as the above-mentioned eye images, combine this with personalized patient health data and even demographics, to determine at what point in the future that individual will begin to develop cataracts. Once developed, this will bring a whole new raft of surgical planning tools into the approach towards cataract care.
2. The Pre-Op Stage
AI is already changing the pre-operative playing field. These tools can map and calculate the tiniest nuances within the eye, making for a highly accurate operative map for the surgeon to work with. It can make incredibly precise calculations for the right intraocular lens (IOL) that will best suit individual patient requirements—something that’s especially advantageous for more complex procedures—as well as reducing reliance on supportive eyeglasses after the operation.
3. The Operative Stage
During laser-assisted surgery, AI tools help guide the entire procedure. This offers real-time imaging, which provides the surgeon with incredible images of the inner eye. In turn, this improves where the incision is made and the precision placement of the IOL—something that’s essential for the best visual outcome of premium lenses with minimal chances of post-op issues.
AI can even predict any potential issues as the operation progresses, allowing the surgeon to take mitigating steps for a smooth procedure. In smart-integrated operating theatres, AI can even lend a physical robotic hand to further increase accuracy.
4. The Post-Op Stage
Further magic occurs after the event, with routine patient assessment via AI tools allowing certain areas of monitoring to be carried out remotely. Patients can report progress and any symptoms, which could potentially reduce how many physical post-op clinic visits are necessary.
Of course, you’ll still need in-person check-ups after the event but, once the initial stages are satisfied, then there are multiple ways that AI monitoring can streamline the process.
Another way that AI is enhancing cataract surgery outcomes is through training. By allowing doctors to practice in the virtual realm, they can learn and hone their skills entirely risk-free. It could also potentially mean that a surgeon will be able to “practice” on a particularly challenging or complex operation to determine outcomes before physically performing them.
The role of AI in cataract surgery is already revolutionizing care. This is only set to increase as technology advances, and the West Boca Eye Center is proud to be at the forefront of this.
