What Is the Crystalens?

The Crystalens is the first and only FDA-approved accommodating intraocular lens (IOL) designed for patients undergoing cataract surgery. Unlike standard monofocal lenses that focus at a single fixed distance, the Crystalens features flexible hinges that allow the optic to shift forward and back inside the eye, mimicking your natural focusing ability. This means you can see clearly at near, intermediate, and distance without splitting light the way multifocal lenses do.

At West Boca Eye Center in Boca Raton, Dr. Brent Bellotte implants the Crystalens as part of our premium cataract surgery program, giving patients an option that delivers a continuous range of vision with significantly reduced glare and halos compared to diffractive multifocal alternatives.

How the Crystalens Works

The Crystalens uses three optical principles working together to deliver a natural visual experience:

  • Accommodation: Flexible hinges allow the lens optic to move in response to the ciliary muscle, shifting focus between near and far objects naturally.
  • Single focal point: 100% of incoming light is directed through one focal point rather than being split across multiple zones, which reduces visual artifacts like rings around lights.
  • Precision fit: Each Crystalens is manufactured in 0.25 diopter increments, hand-inspected, and power-verified individually before implantation.

Because the Crystalens works with your eye's existing focusing mechanism rather than against it, most patients report a more natural visual experience than with multifocal IOLs, particularly in low-light and nighttime driving conditions.

Clinical Results

The effectiveness of the Crystalens has been validated through extensive clinical trials with bilateral implantation (both eyes treated):

  • 88.4% of bilateral Crystalens patients achieved improved vision at all distances, compared to 35.9% with standard monofocal IOLs.
  • 92% achieved 20/25 or better distance vision without glasses.
  • 96% achieved 20/20 vision at arm's length (computer, dashboard, cooking).
  • 73% achieved 20/25 near vision without correction.
  • 98% could pass a standard driver's license exam without corrective lenses.
  • 98% experienced no surgical complications.
  • 95% reported measurably improved vision after implantation.

Dr. Bellotte evaluates each patient individually to determine whether one or both eyes should be treated and the optimal interval between procedures.

Who Is a Candidate for Crystalens?

The Crystalens may be right for you if:

  • You have been diagnosed with cataracts affecting your daily activities.
  • You want to reduce or eliminate dependence on glasses after surgery.
  • You prefer a lens that works with your eye's natural focusing system.
  • You are concerned about glare and halos associated with multifocal IOLs.
  • You spend significant time at intermediate distances such as computer work, cooking, or reading music.

Candidacy depends on your overall eye health, the severity of your cataract, and your visual goals. Patients with chronic eye infections or uncontrolled diabetes may need to address those conditions before proceeding. During your consultation at West Boca Eye Center, Dr. Bellotte performs a thorough examination to determine whether the Crystalens is the best fit for your lifestyle and visual needs.

The Crystalens Procedure

Crystalens implantation is performed as part of standard cataract surgery at West Boca Eye Center. The procedure typically takes 15 to 20 minutes per eye and is performed on an outpatient basis.

  1. Anesthesia: Topical numbing drops are applied to the eye. You remain awake but feel no pain, only slight pressure.
  2. Lens removal: A small incision is made in the cornea, and the clouded natural lens is broken up using ultrasound energy (phacoemulsification) and gently removed.
  3. Implantation: The foldable Crystalens is inserted through the same incision and positioned inside the lens capsule, where its hinges allow it to flex and accommodate.
  4. Closure: The micro-incision seals on its own without stitches.

If both eyes require surgery, Dr. Brent Bellotte typically schedules the second eye one to two weeks after the first to allow initial healing and evaluate your response.

Recovery and What to Expect

First 24 to 48 hours: Distance vision often improves noticeably within one to two days. You may experience mild blurriness, light sensitivity, or watering, which is normal.

First two weeks: Most patients return to work and driving within two to three days. Avoid heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, swimming, and rubbing your eyes during this period.

One to three months: Near and intermediate vision continue to improve as the eye adapts to the accommodating lens. Some patients notice gradual sharpening at close range over several weeks.

Follow-up schedule: You will be seen one day after surgery, again at two to four weeks, at three to six months, and then annually unless any concerns arise.

Risks and Safety

Crystalens implantation carries the same low risk profile as standard cataract surgery. Rare complications may include:

  • Infection
  • Hemorrhage
  • Retinal detachment
  • Lens dislocation

In clinical studies, 98% of Crystalens patients experienced no complications. Glare and halos at night are not common with the Crystalens and are rarely debilitating when they do occur.

A small percentage of patients may develop posterior capsule opacification (a cloudy membrane behind the implant) months or years after surgery. This is easily corrected with a painless YAG laser capsulotomy that takes only a few minutes. Once the Crystalens is implanted, you will never need cataract surgery on that eye again.

Insurance and Cost

  • Medicare: Covers the basic cataract surgery procedure with a conventional monofocal IOL. Patients who choose the Crystalens pay an additional out-of-pocket fee for the premium lens upgrade.
  • Private insurance: Most plans cover the surgical procedure and anesthesia. Coverage for the premium IOL upgrade varies by carrier.
  • Financing: Payment options may be available. Our team at West Boca Eye Center can discuss cost details during your consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Crystalens provide 20/20 vision at all distances?

The Crystalens is designed to focus at varying distances using accommodation. While many patients achieve excellent vision at all ranges, some may not reach 20/20 at every distance due to individual ocular factors. Your results depend on your eye anatomy and healing response.

Will I still need reading glasses?

Most patients experience significant reduction in glasses dependence. Some may prefer reading glasses for extended close-up work in dim lighting. The Crystalens performs best in good lighting conditions for near tasks.

Does the Crystalens cause glare or halos at night?

Glare and halos are not common problems with the Crystalens because it distributes 100% of light rays through a single focal point rather than splitting light like multifocal lenses. Temporary symptoms are possible but rarely debilitating.

Will I need cataract surgery again after Crystalens?

No. The Crystalens is a permanent implant that does not degrade, cloud, or require replacement. However, a secondary cataract membrane may develop, which can be treated with a painless YAG laser procedure that takes only minutes.

Can I have other eye procedures after Crystalens?

Yes. Patients with a Crystalens can undergo Botox, cosmetic eyelid procedures, pterygium removal, and other eye surgeries. A waiting period of approximately three months after implantation is recommended before additional procedures.

Does insurance cover the Crystalens?

Private insurance may cover the cataract surgery procedure and anesthesia. Medicare covers the conventional IOL portion, but patients are responsible for the additional cost of the premium Crystalens upgrade. Costs vary by provider and location.

How long does the Crystalens last?

The Crystalens is a permanent implant. Long-term clinical data shows excellent visual outcomes with minimal complication rates since its FDA approval.
