Can LASIK Fix Astigmatism?

LASIK, or laser in situ keratomileusis, is a form of corrective laser vision surgery that’s very successful in treating the condition known as astigmatism. In the majority of cases, lasik eye surgery results in complete correction with a single treatment. The procedure is safe, fast, and has a short recovery period, making it a highly desirable option for a life without the need for glasses or contacts.

About astigmatism

Astigmatism is a condition where the shape of the cornea is asymmetrical—rather like that of an egg. This causes the vision to be blurred. Previously, laser vision correction wasn’t an option for those with astigmatism, but major advances in technology and procedures mean that LASIK is now one of the leading methods to fix astigmatism. The accuracy of the lasers is such that, in cases of mild to average astigmatism, the eye surgeon can reshape the cornea so effectively that vision is restored to at least 20/25. For those with a severe refractive error (known as high astigmatism), and if your ophthalmologist considers it appropriate, LASIK is still an option, although you might require an additional treatment for the ultimate result.

Typical results

As already mentioned, LASIK can fix astigmatism to at least 20/25, and very often to 20/20 vision. However, you should be aware that as you age it’s still likely that you’ll eventually need glasses for activities such as reading or driving at night.

What makes a good candidate for LASIK eye surgery?

  •     Eye health
  •     General health

Eye health

LASIK eye surgery for astigmatism is commonly carried out on those with a mild to moderate level of refractive error. Your eyes will be in generally good health, with no excessive abnormalities, and your vision (prescription) will be stable.

General health

You’ll also need to be healthy, as certain medical conditions can raise any associated risks. Conditions that might make you an unsuitable candidate include autoimmune disorders, diabetes, and chronic pain conditions. Anyone who’s pregnant or nursing should wait a suitable period before undergoing LASIK vision correction.
